I. CĂN THỨC BẬC HAI 

    Với $A$ là biểu thức đại số, $\sqrt{A}$ được gọi là căn thức bậc hai của $A$.

$\boxed{\sqrt A \; \text{xác định}  \Leftrightarrow A \ge 0}$

Ví dụ: $\sqrt {5-2x}$ xác định $ \Leftrightarrow 5 - 2x \ge 0$

                                          $ \Leftrightarrow 2x \le 5$

                                          $ \Leftrightarrow x \le \dfrac{5}{2}$

II. HẰNG ĐẲNG THỨC $\sqrt {A^2 }  = \left| A \right|$

Định lí: Với $A$ là một biểu thức đại số hoặc một số, ta có $\sqrt {A^2 }  = \left| A \right|$.

Ví dụ: Tính $\sqrt {\left( { - 1,5} \right)^2 } $

Cách 1: $\sqrt {\left( { - 1,5} \right)^2 }  = \sqrt {2,25}  = 1,5$

Cách 2: $\sqrt {\left( { - 1,5} \right)^2 }  = \left| { - 1,5} \right| = 1,5$

Ví dụ: Rút gọn 

$\sqrt {\left( {\sqrt 5  - 2} \right)^2 }  = \left| {\sqrt 5  - 2} \right| = \sqrt 5  - 2$

$\sqrt {\left( {\sqrt 3  - 2} \right)^2 }  = \left| {\sqrt 3  - 2} \right| = 2 - \sqrt 3 $
